Steve Komphela’s position as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs is once again coming under scrutiny as they went five games without a win last night, and it appears that the club are making contingency plans.
The Amakhosi are now into their third season with Komphela leading the team, and as it stands have not won a single piece of major silverware.
With Komphela’s contract at the club set to expire at the end of the current season, there have been suggestions that he will not be offered a new deal and – given current results – there is also a chance that he might not even reach the end of it at all.
As reported in this week’s issue of Soccer Laduma, there are now two names being linked as possible successors, with Luc Eymael and Doctor Khumalo being thrown into the hat.
Sources say that Eymael, currently with Free State Stars, is seen as a potential appointment in the future for the Glamour Boys, although he does still have over a year left to run on his Ea Lla Koto deal and Chiefs would therefore need to buy him out of his contract.
The other name, Khumalo’s, is a club legend working as Baroka FC’s technical director following his departure from Amakhosi. There is talk of a sensational return should the head coaching position open up, or he could even return as a TD at Naturena.
Komphela could save his skin if Chiefs can push for the league title and/or win the Nedbank Cup trophy, but unless that happens then he could well be looking at the exit door.
